19 Celebs Who Were Born To Play Superheroes But Haven’t Yet

It takes a specific kind of person to play a superhero convincingly, and here are 20 actors who were born to do it.

Sometimes, the casting of a film is so perfect that it had to be fate that certain actors were destined to portray certain characters. It seems so with actors such as Robert Downey, Jr. and his incredible, eerily perfect portrayal of pompous, egomaniac, Tony Stark, a.k.a. Iron Man, or the brilliant way Chris Evans embodies the idealism and wholesome goodness of Steve Rogers, a.k.a. Captain America. That was casting genius, but it is also those actors who can actually justify their castings by embodying the role and giving the performance that can make or break a successful superhero film. This is the same for the superhero projects currently being produced for the small screen. I mean, come on, Stephen Amell could easily transition and portray the role of Oliver Queen, a.k.a. Green Arrow, on a big cinematic release.

Now, while no superhero film is guaranteed cinematic success, the right actor for the right role is extremely important and could quickly establish the film’s direction and certify the director’s and writer’s vision for the character and the film. So far, the superhero film genre has enjoyed immense success financially with some critical backlash here and there, but for the most part, fan-approved. However, the longer the genre enjoys top moneymaking status in today’s cinemas, the more important casting and story become and how well the actors can embody these characters, otherwise, viewer fatigue will set in quickly, and the genre’s demise will begin. While there is a veritable pool of acting talent out there that could excel in a superhero role, some actors were pretty much born to play them; those few acting talents that fans have eagerly waited to see suit up as their favorite character. We all know the ones I’m talking about. We can already envision them taking those momentous first steps into superhero legend! Which ones will actually do it? Join us as we take a look at 20 celebs who were born to play superheroes (but haven’t yet).

Fans of the Hunger Games franchise and HBO’s, Game of Thrones, know well the talents of Natalie Dormer. She’s experiencing her fair amount of success but as of yet, has failed to land a lead role in a major studio film. Thanks to her popular and strong role as Margaery Tyrell in the hit HBO series, Dormer has demonstrated that she has what it takes to pick up a hero’s mantle and run with it in her own, or ensemble, superhero film. She’s already dipped her toe into the superhero genre with a brief appearance in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger as Army Private Lorraine, but she is now primed to dive in. She’s no stranger to action scenes and big-budget films. The number of Marvel or DC roles she could portray is numerous. What about Hawkgirl in a Justice League film, or Rachel Summers in an X-Men movie?

Even though she’s already been seen in the MCU, the role was so minor, she could easily slip back in as Sue Storm (given that Marvel reacquires the rights), Moondragon, or possibly a new Thor.

Chris Hemsworth is doing fine as the powerful Asgardian, but he won’t play the role forever. If the comics are any indication, having a female Thor is certainly possible.

Omari Hardwick might not be a household name, but he does have some Hollywood and fan cred. Though he doesn’t have all that many film or television credits to his name, his lead role in the Starz series, Power, is incredible. His portrayal of club owner and drug kingpin, “Ghost,” is compelling and has contributed to the show’s popularity increasing every week. As a great actor who has been flying under the radar, he might be perfect to take on a role such as DC’s Green Lantern.

We’ve already seen a cinematic version of Hal Jordan crash and burn, but what about the long-awaited return with John Stewart assuming the vacant spot in the Green Lantern Corps?

We know a film project of the same name has been kicked around for a few years, and Hardwick could be just the guy to take it on. Many people are on the Idris Elba train; he’s awesome and can no doubt draw in the crowds. The studio would be doing itself a great service with going with a lesser known actor in the role; albeit an actor who can deliver the goods. We think Hardwick should top the list.
